*There are some exceptions to the above belt coloring system.  For example: 4th dans can become eligible for ceremonial titles/belts, a student that excels in teaching ability might make Shidoshi Sho(lesser advice person), this is a single lateral(lengthwise) silver stripe/ or maybe a Shidoshi Dai (greater advise person) and wear a single lateral(lengthwise) gold stripe.   Also beginning at Yodan, but more common at Godan a student may be awarded the title of Renshi Sho(lesser polished person)which is a red/white belt running lengthwise with white side up.   Renshi Dai(greater polished person)red/white running lengthwise with red side up.

In Judo, Professor titles begin at 6th dan, but only for a select few.  The student “may” become eligible for Kyoshi Sho (lesser faithful man)with a single silver stripe running lengthwise on a Red & White paneled belt and carry the title of “Professor”.    At 7th dan the student “may” become eligible for Kyoshi Dai (greater faithful man) with a single gold stripe running lengthwise on a Red & White Paneled belt also refered to as “Professor”.   At 8th dan, in rare cases the student “may” become eligible for the title of Hanshi, or a person who is the exemplar, or the ideal.  Hanshi ranks are divided into “sho” and “dai” ranks indicating lesser or greater.  Hanshi Sho wears a single silver stripe running lengthwise on a Red belt, Hanshi Dai awarded at 9th dan wears a single gold stripe running lengthwise on a Red belt.

Yudo professor ranks start at the rank of Rokudan 6th dan and are considered to be automatic, this is why its rare to see very many people make this rank, it is hard to obtain.
