 Training Concepts:

Practitioners of Shin Shin Jujitsu typically follow several basic training concepts that facilitate the study of full-range fighting with an emphasis on street-savvy self-defense while using circular or 3 dimensional movement.  Shin Shin Jujitsu is a combat Jujitsu that is very good for Mixed Martial Arts training, it takes time to perfect and make efficient this much technical information.

·          Training must emphasize quality over quantity.  Do more repetitions of fewer techniques until you are very good at them.  In combat, it is not what you “know”, but what you can “do” and how you work the circle.

·          Training must include moderate contact to gain a feel for real-life range.  This can be done with relatively little pain if you wear adequate protective gear.  For example, gloves you can grapple with, headgear with facemask, mouth guard, cup Kevlar-lined bull riding vest and hockey pants.

·          The aggressor is at a distinct disadvantage sometimes.  Sparring must include assignment of aggressor and defender.   Learn to use circular motion to entice the aggressor to reach out of their normal range and then attack hard.  Both people learn from the assignment.

·          It is critical for survival to stay off the ground in virtually every street situation.  On the ground you are almost totally vulnerable to an attack by an additional person.  You can not learn to stay off the ground unless you train regularly with people who are good at grappling.  In practical fact, this means you need to teach grappling to provide the necessary talent for daily training against grapplers.  (know what they know)

·          If you want to build effective reactions for street situations, you must train often with full range sparring.  Compartmentalized training (stand-up for a while, then grappling) breeds dangerous habits.   Don’t stop with one, two, or even three contacts, but continue until submission.  When a well-padded person is attempting to grapple and is hit firmly two or three times before he succeeds in holding on, then you can feel comfortable that at full contact you could have avoided the grapple.  However, in practice, continue with the sparring regardless of the number of strikes.  This gives stimulated practice against the very tough opponents.  People can take more punishment than you may think.

·          The bigger and stronger the opponent, the nastier and deadlier your attack has to be to survive.  Go over the weak points often and practice hitting at them in randori with gloves and closed fist.  Practice hitting bags and moving targets with the “sharp” knuckle attacks using circular and 3 dimensional movement.

·          Strength and endurance training should not be neglected.  It is critically important even on the street.  Weight lifting programs to increase strength, aerobic programs for endurance, and exercise programs that improve explosive, quick movements are encouraged.  Don’t forget to “work the circle during training”.

·          The following Judo / Jujitsu throwing techniques are suggested for Shin Shin Jujitsu students.

·          De Ashi Barai, Okuri Ashi Barai, Harai Tsuri Komi Ashi, Ogoshi, Osoto Gari, Ippon Seoi Nage, Morote Seoi Nage, O uchi Gari, Ko Ouchi Gari, Ko soto Gari, Uchi Mata, Tai Otoshi, Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi, Koshi Guruma, Ashi Guruma, Kata Guruma, O soto Guruma, Guruma, Tsuri Komi Goshi, Morote Gari, Utsuri Goshi, Uki Goshi, Ura Nage, Hadaka Jime, Okuri Eri Jime, Tomoe Nage, Uki Waza, Yoko Wakare, Tani Otoshi, Waki Gatame, Kani Basami, Kawazi Gake, Sumi Gaeshi, Yoko Guruma, Hane Goshi, Harai Goshi, Tsuri Goshi, Kosoto Gake, Hiza Guruma, Soto Makikomi, Hane Makikomi.  (these throws can be taught in order of use and importance by the sensei teaching Shin Shin Jujitsu).

·          Guns, Clubs, and Knives

·          These techniques are numerous, knife and club training should be conducted as a sparring session under the guidelines listed above, along with self defense type training for straight attacks and weapon to weapon type training.    Emphasis should be placed on techniques making use of  “rough motor skills”…..
